Chaka Chaka records signature song for Tutu-hosted climate rally

November 24, 2011

Yvonne Chaka Chaka has recorded a signature song, called “With My Own Two Hands”, for the Tutu-hosted climate change rally that will be held in Durban on Sunday.

She will perform it publicly for the first time at the King’s Park Stadium rally, with rap icon HHP and pop star Chris Chameleon. The words will be projected on a video screen, and the huge stadium crowd will sing along with them in a mass appeal for world leaders to curb climate change.

The song is a call for each person in the world, and world leaders, to take responsibility for a clean environment. It is expected to be available on YouTube by Sunday. Jon Savage is singing along with Chaka Chaka and HHP on the recorded track. American singer-songwriter Ben Harper wrote the lyrics.

Miss Deaf South Africa Shelley Buckle and Miss Deaf Africa, Mbali Nkosi, with their two princesses, Lauren White and Lefa Manamela, will translate the words into sign language at the rally.

The climate change rally will be held in the King’s Park Stadium in Durban as the culmination of a campaign called “We Have Faith – Act Now for Climate Justice”. This campaign is led by faith leaders of Africa and the world, including Archbishop Tutu, who are calling on heads of state at the COP17 talks in Durban to urgently reach a binding agreement on climate change to avoid enormous suffering across the world, especially in Africa.

The artists will sing the song to promote the call of the We Have Faith campaign as well as to launch iStart2, a movement to help communities, artists, the media, activists, government and world leaders to work together to find sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the planet, and to do so in a fun, positive way. World leaders including Al Gore and Bill Clinton have indicated they will become involved.

• The last vehicles in the We Have Faith youth caravan, which had been travelling from Nairobi to Durban, holding climate concerts on the way to raise awareness about the campaign, are arriving in Durban today. Phone Birgit Svendseind on 079 194 5524 to organise interviews.
